This post is my view on the current situation with the Coronavirus outbreak. At this time, it’s a really important topic for me as a frequent traveler. Therefore, I can’t miss the opportunity to share with you my thoughts about it base on the numbers.

I’m writing this post on Thursday the 27th of February 2020. We have 82784 cases worldwide, 2817 deaths, and 33350 people recovered. More and more people get sick in Italy, France, and in the US. Coronavirus is the topic number one in the media and in people’s talks.

The situation in Italy is serious – empty shops and supermarkets, closed schools, universities, towns, and cities. It all starts to look pretty dramatic.

Well, even I took my son today and we went to the market to buy food enough to survive one month…

Ready for one month at home

Numbers, Data, Facts

As numbers always help me understand the situation, I started today to search the internet hoping to find some good sources that will give me a clue about how serious is the situation.

It did not take too long to find Worldometer.info. Great site, full of statistics including these about coronavirus.

Coronavirus and Seasonal Flu Comparison

The first thing which caught my attention was comparison of coronavirus and seasonal flu:

Deaths due to Coronavirus and Seasonal Flu (source: Worldometer.info)

According to the CDC study, every year from 290,000 to 650,000 people die around the world due to complications from seasonal flu.

Searching for Positives – New Cases

I’m not going to be pessimistic. It’s a lot of that in the news.

Looking at the curve of the detected cases, you can see that growth slowed down:

Looking at the daily increases of new cases worldwide – it’s slowing down too:

It looks like the coronavirus starts to be under control – is it really like that?

Coronavirus Situation Outside China

Well, not exactly. The problem starts to grow outside China – take a look at the same graphs as above, but excluding China:

The situation in Europe is not under control, especially in Italy. We will see how it will develop in the next days.

Cured vs. New Cases

Most news focus on deaths and those in serious condition, but let’s see the development of recoveries and new cases:

you can see that more and more people recover from the disease. Another graph shows the decreasing amount of those in serious condition:

And the death rate to recovered where we see declining death rate with increase of recoveries rate:

In my opinion, these are the positives in the whole situation. Maybe it’s not that bad as we all might think.

Wrap Up

Well, that’s it… for now. I will check the situation again and publish what I will find out in a couple of next days. We will see how the situation develops.

Stay tuned if you want to read following analysis.

In the meanwhile, stay safe and I wish you all a really good health.
